In October, Ava's school did a fundraiser to collect money for their Literacy Room. I am not a big fan of the model behind the organization--asking people to pledge, kids are rewarded with ridiculous, cheap, crappy prizes, and when they don't get as many pledges as someone else, inevitably they come home in tears over the $200 pledge slap bracelet that wasn't received that day. (The same bracelet that could easily be picked up at the local Dollar Store). With that said, going to the actual run event was a different story. It was well organized, the guys overseeing it were fun, upbeat and should have been working at a summer camp or on a cruise ship. After several running laps, one of Ava's littlest friends, Caitlyn fell and hurt her knee. Ava was right there to help her up, grab a cup of water, and walk with her the rest of the way, encouraging and rubbing her back as they went along. I loved seeing that--sportsmanship, fun, and caring. It's not about the silly prizes.
