We are still trying to decide how to explain Norwegian traditions and the American traditions we've established with our kids. They know Christmas with Santa Claus; that you go to sleep at night and he sneaks in without being seen. Both kids still fully believe in him and that awe and wonderment on Christmas morning is something I cherish. In Norway, a Julnisse (barn elf) comes and visits often during the Christmas dinner and is seen in plain sight. We explained to Ava and Karsten that this was one of Santa's helpers coming to check in on how they were doing and to let them know that Santa is preparing to make his way from house to house. I am pretty sure not many families in Norway do it this way and our kids certainly weren't opposed to celebrating two days in a row. I guess once they master Norwegian and if the topic comes up among their local friends we will have to come up with a better story, for now it works.
John is wanting to try his hand at home brewing beer--one) as a hobby
and two) to set off the extreme cost of buying beer here in Norway.
Hope it's a big success, perhaps we can set up a pub out of our grill hut.
LOVE
Sweet sculptures John bought from the kids--
perfectly depict each of them.
And from this moment on the remainder of the day was spent
building Legos--totally enthralled and occupied. (Pappa too!)
